SmarTrip® cards are accepted across all local and regional transit systems in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia. They can be used to pay your transit fare and parking at a Metro Station.

How much is a SmarTrip Card?

A SmarTrip card costs $10 which covers the $2 fee for the card and comes pre-loaded with $8 fare towards your first ride.

Where to buy a SmarTrip Card?

On Your Phone: Download the SmarTrip App or add SmarTrip to your Apple Wallet or Google Wallet and follow the prompts to purchase a new digital card.

What is the Tap. Ride. Go. program?

Tap. Ride. Go. was launched across WMATA’s transit system in 2025 to expand the range of payment options accepted for riders to utilize when paying their fare. Beyond SmarTrip cards, riders on Metrorail and Metrobus can use physical or digital credit and debit cards.

This new payment system is unique to WMATA. Local and regional transit systems typically only accept SmarTrip cards or exact change in cash.

Can I pay with my digital wallet?

Yes. Tap-to-pay is available throughout WMATA’s system including Metrorail and Metrobus.

Ways to Pay:

  • Physical credit and debit card
  • Physical and digital SmarTrip card
  • Exact change in cash (for bus) or uploaded to a SmarTrip card at a fare vending machine (for rail)

Note: Those who participate in the SmartBenefits Program should pay their fare with the SmarTrip card registered to their account when commuting.
