Safe Routes to School

Safe Routes to School helps make it easier and safer for children living at MetroWest to walk, bike or roll to school by providing information on the best routes and resources for families.

By using a safe route to walk or bike to school, your school-aged child can get more exercise and fresh air daily and gain a sense of independence.

Here are the safest routes for kids to walk and bike to local schools:

Marshall Road Elementary

  • Take the walkway to Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro Station.
  • Walk across the bridge, then along the sidewalk beside the parking lot towards Virginia Center Blvd.

  • Walk until you reach Nutley St SW, then use the crosswalk to cross to the NE corner of the intersection.

SchoolPool

SchoolPool is a secure system that helps families connect with carpools for trips to and from school. SchoolPool helps relieve traffic congestion during arrival and dismissal, alleviate school bus driver shortages and create community within your school. SchoolPool is operated by Commuter Connections and provided to schools for free by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG).

Take Action

Encourage your school to join the SchoolPool program by sending an email to your school’s administration! Copy and paste the text below to use our email template.

Dear Principal [Insert Name Here],

Please enroll our school in SchoolPool, the secure system that helps families share the ride to school. It’s administered by Commuter Connections, part of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.

School administrators love SchoolPool because it relieves traffic congestion around school during arrival and dismissal, helps alleviate bus driver shortages, and creates community within school. Commuter Connections provides the SchoolPool platform for FREE to schools; your responsibility is to regularly promote the program to families at school.

How it works: Families opt-in to a specific school’s SchoolPpool program, using a link exclusive to each school. Once enrolled, families connect with nearby families or ones who live along the way to share the ride to school via carpooling, walking, biking, or riding Metro together.

Contact Commuter Connections at ridematching@mwcog.org and 800-745-7433 to learn more!

Sincerely,
